ART CLASSES

Our Classes
At Rainbow Street Art Studio  we offer a variety of classes tailored to different age groups. We teach lessons for primary school aged children through to adults. 

We provide specialized workshops for teenagers and adults and private tutoring for all ages, including HSC Visual Art students. Our experienced teacher provides personalized guidance to nurture students’ individual creativity and develop their artistic skills.

 

Are these classes suitable for you?

Our classes are designed for learning the fundamentals of painting, drawing and ceramics.  They are suitable for beginners and intermediate level students who wish to expand their knowledge and skills.

 

What to expect

  • small groups of up to 8 students

  • learn a wide range of drawing, painting, sculpting and ceramic techniques

  • learn visual art fundamentals: colour theory, colour mixing, tone, brushwork, mark making, composition, texture, paint application and more

  • learn about the important elements and principles of art and design and how these can be applied to your individual art practice

  • relax, have fun, feel inspired and gain confidence while you learn to express yourself through making art  

What is included?

All materials are provided for childrens classes

A simple materials list will be provided prior to the first lesson to students who enroll in teenage and adult classes

ART CLASSES FOR ALL AGES:
PRIMARY SCHOOL TO ADULT

Kids painting and drawing classes

Our Afterschool and Saturday Art Classes are designed to help children develop their creative thought processes, to encourage self-expression, and to foster confidence in drawing, painting and clay-making skills. 


We explore many themes and art materials to inspire and educate children throughout the terms. 


Our Kids Art Classes make learning how to draw, paint and sculpt with clay fun and fulfilling for primary school aged children.  


What children will learn:

​

  • drawing lessons, step by step guidance 

  • line drawing and tonal shading

  • fundamentals of proportion and perspective

  • ink medium and watercolour painting

  • how to mix colour and the colour wheel

  • tonal gradation in painting

  • painting with acrylic paint on paper and canvas

  • comic character drawing – imagination development

  • sculpting with air-dried clay – a fun, tactile 3D class

  • Suitable for primary school aged children from 5 to 12 years old

Children’s trial class

We offer an introductory class for children to experience our studio and teaching style. This way children may try our art classes before committing to the full term.

After School Classes

Our Afterschool Art Classes are designed to help children develop their creative thought processes, encourage self-expression, and foster confidence in drawing, painting and clay-making skills. We explore many interesting themes and art materials throughout the term to inspire and educate children. Our After School Art Classes make learning how to draw, paint and sculpt with clay fun and fulfilling for primary school aged children.

Weekend Classes

Our Saturday Art Classes are designed to help children develop their creative thought processes, encourage self-expression, and foster confidence in drawing, painting and clay-making skills. We explore many interesting themes and art materials to inspire and educate children throughout the term. Our Saturday Art Classes make learning how to draw, paint and sculpt with clay fun and fulfilling for primary school aged children.

Teenage Classes

These classes are for creative tweens and teens aged 10 to 18 years old, who are interested in developing their artmaking skills.   

​

Our aim is to nurture confidence in artmaking and development of technical skills.  

Our classes are designed to help young artists to develop their creative thought processes, explore self-expression and expand their artistic potential. 

​

Students will experience a broad range of art materials such as:

 

  • drawing and shading with graphite pencils

  • willow and compressed charcoal

  • coloured ink and watercolour paint

  • acrylic painting on paper and canvas

  • chalk pastels and oil pastels

  • mixed media and collage techniques

 
Across the term we explore interesting themes including figurative art, portraiture, landscape, still life and abstraction.  We look at a broad range of artists, artworks and art movements in order to understand and appreciate the world of art.

We encourage children, tweens and teens to enter their drawings, paintings and ceramics in local art exhibitions and art prizes.

We accept the NSW Services CREATIVE KIDS Voucher for eligible families.

Adult Classes

Our Adult Art Classes are designed for learning the fundamentals of painting and drawing. 
Our lessons suit beginners and intermediate level art students who are looking to expand their art making skills and knowledge.

Lessons in our Kingsford home based studio are small groups of up to 4 students for adults.  

​

Our lessons include learning a broad range of drawing and painting techniques:

​

  • drawing fundamentals including proportion and perspective, line and tone, composition and structure

  • painting fundamentals including tone, colour mixing, tonal ranges, brush work, paint application 

  • learn about many artists, artworks and art movements as part of your experience to understand and be inspired by the world of art

  • gain confidence in artmaking skills and finding your self-expression through artmaking

  • connect with like-minded creatives who love art and learning how to create art

What materials will I need?


Drawing: we will provide drawing materials for you to get started: graphite, charcoal, pastels, cartridge paper, ink, watercolour paper. Drawing materials are included in the class fee. 


Painting: we will send you a simple materials list prior to your first class. 
You don’t need a lot of expensive art materials to get started, just the basics.

We offer a 6-class pass or a 10-class pass, which may be used for up to 3 months.

Art Therapy classes

Art Therapy is based on the concept that creativity can support healing and well-being.  The aim of art therapy is to use creative processes to help people find self-expression which can lead to developing social skills and gaining personal insight. 

​

Art Therapy lessons may be enjoyed by people with no previous experience in making art.  Our lessons are created for people who want to feel and function better through exploring creativity. 

​

Our Art Therapy lessons will explore drawing, painting and clay-forming using a broad range of materials and techniques including graphite, charcoal, pastel, coloured pencils, ink, watercolour and acrylic paint and air-dried clay. 

​

Art therapy students are encouraged to use observation, emotion and intuition to find alternate ways of perceiving our surroundings and expressing ourselves. 

​

Our Art Therapy classes offer a theme each lesson and involve a technical skill to explore our theme.  Students will receive step by step guidance in using art materials in order to find self-expression while making art. 

​

Our Art Therapy lessons are suitable for complete beginners through to intermediate level artists.  If you love to explore art making as a healing process, these classes will suit you. 

 

We offer Art Therapy lessons online and in-person
A simple materials list will be provided for students. 


Our in-person classes have a maximum of 4 students at our Kingsford home studio 

Mondays 12noon-2pm in person
Tuesdays 12noon-2pm on zoom

En-plein Air - Landscape/Seascape Class

Do you love landscape and seascape drawings and paintings? 


Would you like to learn how to draw and paint the land and the sea, on location? 

​

Our En-plein Air Landscape/Seascape class is designed for people who would love to draw or paint the landscape and the seascape. 

​

Lessons start with simple drawing processes and develop into painting lessons. 

​

Students will meet our teacher, Rachel on location and be guided through how to work from the landscape/seascape. 

Rachel will introduce ways of seeing and simplifying the landscape/seascape in order to create well composed drawings and paintings.  


First lessons focus on seeing the fore, middle and background to create composition. 


Lessons in proportion, perspective, tone, colour, simplification of detail, markmaking in drawing, brushwork in painting will be covered to help students find their own way to interpret the landscape/seascape. 

​

Our En-plein Air Lessons are for 3 hours, on location.


Students will be provided with a simple materials list for what to bring, prior to our first lesson. 

Students will also be provided with images of drawings and paintings to help them to see and understand artists’ ways of interpreting the landscape and seascape. 

​

  • Coogee Bay area (we look at painting by Tom Roberts) Holiday Sketch at Coogee 1888

  • Wylie’s Baths (Coogee) and surrounds

  • Observatory Hill (painted by Portia Geach)

  • Red Leaf Pool (Vaucluse)

  • Cockatoo Island

  • Centennial Park

If students have preference for a specific location, they may suggest this to our teacher Rachel who will aim to accommodate their interests.

Class time will be arranged upon enrollment request. 

Colour Theory Online

Do you want to learn about how Colour works and gain confidence in applying colour to your art? 

​

Our 6-week online Colour Theory course will help you to understand the Traditional Colour Wheel and the importance of understanding the application of colour in your art making practice.

​

We learn about the behaviour of colours and how the primary, secondary and tertiary colours relate to each other.  
We learn about analogous colour, complementary opposite colours and colour saturation.  

We practice colour mixing and observe colour contrast, colour harmony and colour schemes in artworks to understand how Colour Theory is applied well. 

Private Tuition

Our Individual Private lessons are designed to meet specific student’s needs of all ages.

 

From primary school, through high school to adult students, we listen to what you are wanting to learn and teach lessons based on your individual interests and needs.

 

Our teacher Rachel has been working with HSC Visual Art students at the National Art School for >21 years, teaching in the modalities of drawing and painting.

 

Lessons are held in our Kingsford home studio where students may bring their artwork for feedback, idea development and to refine technical skills.

 

If students prefer a home visit, this may be arranged on an individual basis, depending on location
